Identity Cards Victim of Election

The grand plan for ID cards in the UK is likely to be dumped due to Tony Blair calling the general election.

The prime minister is today expected to ask the Queen to dissolve Parliament. This will trigger a May 5th election.

Party managers in the House then have to agree which bills will be sacrificed to get others through. Cross party support is essential if any of them are to succeed.

The identity card issue is a contentious following on from the fractious Anti-Terrorism Act.

Other issues involved with the proposed scheme include the number of things the government, want to do with the card, the massive database and trying privacy concerns.

Conservatives in the Lords have indicated they will not give the bill support. This would effectively kill the measure.

Laws outlawing religious hatred, bans on selling magic mushrooms and the Gambling bill are also not expected to survive.
