Gartner Warns On Firefox

Gartner has warned firms considering migrating to Firefox, an open-source browser from Mozilla, to think carefully.

In particular they draw attention to the many features designed to attract single personal users rather than businesses.

The personal nature of Firefox meant its historic growth was not sustainable. Firefox, however has been the first browser to even begin making a dent in Internet Explorer's domination of the market. Currently it has 5% of the US market and has been downloaded over 23 million times.

According to Gartner, Firefox could face an upgrade from Microsoft. However this was unlikely in the near future, due to Windows upgrade plans. Longhorn, the next generation of the Windows operating system is due.

Firefox may have been heavily downloaded, but it might still be sitting on users desktops as a backup browser.

Additionally, now that Firefox and other non-Microsoft browsers are denting IE's popularity, the bad guys are targetting them.
