e-Filing of Returns Hits Record

Three-quarters of American taxpayers are filing their annual returns.

Over 8.7m of them are doing so from their own PCs. An increase of 13.7% over last year. Own filers represent the fastest growing segment.

Overall e-filing has increased from 69% of returns to 74%. As the April 15th deadline approaches, the percentage is likely to decline. However the IRS expects more than half the returns to be filed electronically.

Free File a program, sponsored in conjunction with software manufacturers, partly explains the jump in personal filing. Through IRS.gov taxpayers in various groups, can file for free. 2.8m returns came in via this route, an increase of 42.6%.

“E-filing is making a strong start. Taxpayers and tax professionals are becoming increasingly comfortable with e-filing,” said IRS commissioner Mark Everson.
