Softwaretest Speed Up Business Case

Prince2

Project Name Softwaretest Speed Up

Project Document Business Case

The business case in PRINCE2 is a definition of the reasons for the project and the expected business benefits and savings to come from use of the project's final outcome.

This document is the Business Case underpinning the project to speed up the compilation of the http://www.softwaretest.force9.co.uk website.

Derivation The business case is derived from information in the Project Brief and the Project Mandate.

Reasons

*Compilation of the website takes over 6 hours. Information entered onto the database locally might not appear for 6-7 hours on the site, rendering it out of date. Therefore reduce time from authorship to web presence.
*Reduce the number of 404 errors caused by hyper-links to pages that have not compiled yet.
*Reduce the drag before web site stakeholders can be notified of the new content.

Options Two options were available:-

Re-engineer the compilation process Re-engineering involves amending the manner in which GDI-Pro compiles the HTML using temporary tables.

Re-architecture the site with dynamic content. Move www.softwaretest.force9.co.uk to a JSP or ASP.NET architectured solution.

The selected option is to re-engineer the compilation process. Re-engineering was chosen because:-

*Significant progress has already been made in new keyword functionality.
*We already have significant skill and knowledge in the use of GDI-Pro
*Moving to a dynamic solution would take a significant amount of resources, the supply of which can not be guaranteed.

Benefits A successful project outcome would produce the following benefits:-

*Complete rebuilding of the site 3 times a day rather than once.
*Notifying stakeholders and users within 3 hours of writing content.
*Able to run other site compilation scripts in the same day.

Cost and Timescale Cost is estimated to be £2,000. Project completion is due for 31/08/05.

Investment Appraisal.

The reduced time to compile the script we estimate, will enable approximately 100-200 pages a day of HTML to be added to the site.

The additional pages over the course of the year will have a significant positive impact on advertising and book revenues.
