IndIan Call Centre Fraud Arrests

Authorities in India have arrested three Indian call centre workers for defrauding US bank customers.

The three men were employees of Mphasis. The firm runs call centres in Bangalore and Pune. Customers of Citibank were the victims of the crime.

$350,000 is the monetary effect of the fraud. At the time of the arrests, it is thought further transactions were imminent.

Another nine people have also been arrested.

The modus operandi, involved good social hacking. Allegedly, the men tricked customers into divulging information, including PIN numbers from customers. Funds were then transferred illegally.

Pune's Cyber Crime Unit arrested the accused, following complaints by Citibank customers regarding dubious transactions.

Mphasis, speaking to AP, commented "While we are unhappy with the incident itself, we are at the same time quite pleased that detection systems worked and that there was swift, coordinated information exchange between the affected parties."
