Chairman Michael G. Oxley (OH) will convene the Financial Services Committee to receive testimony from Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chairman Christopher Cox on Wednesday, May 3 at 10 a.m. in room 2128 of the Rayburn Building.

The hearing, entitled Protecting Investors and Fostering Efficient Markets: A Review of the SEC Agenda, will focus on current SEC initiatives to enhance investor protection, financial clarity, and market efficiency.

Recent SEC initiatives include: rules modernizing market structure, reducing complexity in financial reporting, and registration of hedge fund managers.

During the 109th Congress, the Financial Services Committee and its Capital Markets Subcommittee have held hearings to assess the self-regulatory system of the capital markets, to evaluate the SEC’s market structure proposal, to improve the accuracy and usefulness of financial reporting, and to review ways to increase competition in the credit ratings industry.

The Financial Services Committee oversees the operations of the Securities and Exchange Commission.  Since its creation in 1934, the SEC has regulated the U.S. capital markets to ensure investor protection and maintain orderly markets.
