Virus Attacks Up 50%

Virus attack on enterprises increased in number by half between 2003 and 2004. The percentage of machines attacked rose dramatically as well. Recovery costs though, have gone up.

The survey by ICSA Labs, a division of Cybertrust, had sponsorship from industry heavyweights. Microsoft, McAfee, Sophos and Trend Micro all contributed.

300 companines and organisations provided the data. The "virus encounter" rate rose by 50% to 392 per 1,000 machines per month. Actual infestations also rose to 116 per month.

A virus disaster is and infestation of more than 25 PCs or servers are affected at the same time. The virus also has to cause monetary or significant damage. The number of these rose 12% to 112 from last year.

Perception counts for a lot. 91% of respondents felt that malicious code is worse or much worse" than last year.

Recovery has got harder as well. Seven person-days and £73,000 in fact. Both these figures are an increase of 25%.
